Odisha ranked 7th among states in Labour Reforms

Odisha has been ranked as 7th in Labour Reforms in India. This has been released in 'Implementation of Business Reforms Report, 2015' prepared by World Bank and CII recently. Minister, Still & Mines, Labour & ESI Sri Prafulla Kumar Mallik reacting on this success said it will build confidence in investors and attract investment to the state.
During a year period the Labour ESI Department has taken several positive measures for good service delivery and better citizen interface. The Composite Inspection Scheme introduced by the Department will help in timely inspection and preparation of transparent inspection scheduled. The industries and commercial establishments also will have a special scheme like Voluntary Compliance Scheme where inspection will be made once in three years. Likewise, one Common Application Form (CAF) which makes it easier for investors to obtain statutory clearance from different Departments through a single window system is introduced. Seven Act like Odisha Shops and Commercial Establishment Act, 1950, the Beedi & Cigar Workers Act-1996, Motor Transport Workers Act-1961, Contract Labour(R&A) Act-1970, Inter State Migrant Workmen (RE&CS) Act-1979, Building & other Construction Workers (RE&CS) Act-1996 and Industrial Employment Standing Order Act- 1946 have been brought under the Odisha Right to Public Services Act-2012 to ensure time bound registration, renewal and issue of licences.

Chief Minister Shri Naveen Patnaik felicitating Lalita Prasida Sripada Srisai for winning Google Science Fair at Cali fornia, USA. Odisha's Lalita Prasida gets limelight after she has bagged an award at the Google Science Fair in the the 'Google Community Impact' sub category. The 13-year-old from Odisha was nominated in the Community Impact category which is for projects that make a difference in the innovator's community by addressing environmental, health and resource management issues.
Lalita, who is a Class 9 student in Delhi Public School, Damanjodi presented a project on a 'Low-cost bio absorbent', which aimed at cleaning through a simple and cost-effective way. She has developed a water purifier that works using waste corn cobs, which has won her an award of USD 10,000. Google Science Fair gives away a grand prize of USD 50,000 in scholarship. The competition received entries in 15 languages; there were 90 regional and 20 global finalists short listed.

9 Odisha kabaddi players died in road Accident

Nine kabaddi players died in a road mishap at Suarapali in Sundargarh district on Saturday. The accident took place when the mini-truck they were travelling in, lost its balance and fell down from a bridge. 21 people from Sendhapur were returning from Dhudi Gaon after playing a kabaddi match. Three people died at the spot while six passed away later during treatment. Odisha government has announced Rs.1 lakh ex-gratia to the family of those killed and the injured people will be treated at free of cost.

Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha

Abdul Kalam Island: Odisha government in september 2015 renamed the wheeler island, the missile launching station of the Defence and Reasearch Development Organisation in the Bay of Bengal close to Dharma coast after former President Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam. Announcing the decision of the state government, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said, the wheeler island had played a major role in the test fire of missiles and Dr Kalam has a major contribution in it. "Renaming the island as Abdul Kalam Island will inspire our youngsters to work dedicatedly for scientific research. It is a humble tribute to the People's President," said chief minister Naveen Patnaik while announcing renaming of the island. Naveen said the island assumes great significance in view of its strategic location. It has been used as the launching pad for India's missile defence system. Remembering Kalam's association with Odisha and the Island, Naveen said Kalam was working at Defence Research and Development Organization, Balasore for pretty long. "It was Biju Babu (Biju Patnaik), who allotted the historic Wheeler Island to the ministry of defence on the request of Dr Kalam in 1993," Naveen added.

  • Abdul Kalam Island (former Wheeler Island) is located approximately 10 kilometres off the Odisha coast on the Bay of Bengal. 
  • Abdul Kalam Island is about 2 kilometres in length and 390 acres, is considered as country's most advanced missile testing site.
  • Abdul Kalam Island is the missile test facility for most missiles of India; Akash Missiles, Agni Missiles, Astra Missile, BrahMos, Nirbhay, Prahaar Missile, Prithvi Missiles, Shaurya Missile, Advanced Air Defence (AAD), and Prithvi Air Defence.

Odisha CM lays Foundation of MIMSR, Talcher

Shri Naveen Patnaik, Chief Minister of Odisha, today laid the foundation stone of Mahanadi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (MIMSR) , a Rs 492 crore CSR project of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), in Talcher Coalfields of Odisha. The foundation stone of ambitious CSR project in the country’s largest coalfield by a coal CPSU was laid in the august presence of Shri Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of State (IC) for Coal, Power and New & Renewable Energy and Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister of State (IC) for Petroleum & Natural Gas. Shri Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak, Health and Family Welfare Minister, Government of Odisha, Shri Tathagata Satpathy, MP, Dhenkanal constituency and Shri Braja Kishore Pradhan, MLA, Talcher constituency were among the distinguished people present at the ceremony, which was witnessed by a large gathering of people of peripheral areas of MCL.
The MIMSR will have a 100-seat medical college with 500 bedded multi-specialty Hospital with the state-of-the-art medical facilities in Anatomy, Bio-chemistry, Micro-Biology, Physiology, FM, toxicology, Pharmacology, Pathology, Community Medicine, Laboratory and Library. The project envisages a hostel for 300 boys, a separate hostel for 200 girl students, two blocks of Hostel for 100 interns, a hostel for 57 junior resident doctors and a 50-bedded nurses’ hostel. It also includes separate 42 flats for faculty members, and higher accommodation facility for professors and the head of the institution. Planned on the Smart and Green Concept with Building Management System by public sector construction major National Building Construction Corporation Ltd. (NBCC), the MIMSR campus would also have a modern Gym, Guest House and Shopping arcade.
